Archetype Archive: The Highly Sensitive Person/Empath

Are you becoming increasingly sensitive? There may be people whose company you no longer keep, places where you can pickup a sense of joy or terror, food that you now avoid and having time away from social media is essential to your well-being. I believe that this is a wonderful shift as it directs us to be mindful about what we are consuming or spending our time and energy on.

When Elaine Aron wrote her book The Highly Sensitive Person in 1996 she gave us insight into this characteristic. However lately I have seen the HSP (aka The Empath) become a prominent archetype in the spiritual and self-development world.

I identify as an HSP which is why I have an affinity with energy medicine. Being an HSP/Empath allows me to feel the subtle, the unseen, suppressed emotions and identify the archetypes in my clients' psyches. (Training was definitely required to develop my energy medicine skills and strengthen my discernment).

Like all archetypes The HSP/Empath has both light and shadow qualities:
Light qualities

  • Ability to use all senses to take in information including gut instinct, intuition and sixth sense.
  • Can interpret information that is not obvious ie. emotions, unconscious motivations, what happened in a room before the empath arrived.
  • A great source of comfort and understanding for those going through difficult times.
  • Creates beautiful boundaries to preserve energy.
  • Expresses and feels a range of emotion including joy, celebration and gratitude.
  • Enhanced capacity for empathy and a deep understanding that we are all connected.

Shadow qualities

  • Blames all triggering on being “too sensitive” – maybe traumatised and triggered not "too sensitive".
  • Uses acquired information to undermined or manipulate people.
  • Gets dragged down due to lack of boundaries. Tries to help everyone and becomes a martyr.
  • Does not allow people to walk their own path and allow them to have their own life lessons.

Carolyn Myss who I am excited to see when she comes to Sydney early next year recently posted this on her website:
You are not imagining that you are more sensitive to the world around you, more inclined to need quiet time, more attuned to the emotions of of others, more perceptive about the difference between what you see and what you sense. You, along with all the rest of us, are transitioning to a more expansive level of awareness in which your inner sight is becoming dominant over what you physically hear and see.

The Empath/HSP is rising. It is rising in all of us. This archetype is softening our hearts, dialing up our senses and hacking away the psychic armour that blocks us from feeling. Really feeling. The good, the bad, the painful and the ecstatic.

As an energy practitioner I would love to support you on the journey with your inner HSP/Empath with an energy and coaching session. Either via Zoom or at my space in Dover Heights.

In the mean time to support your inner Empath/HSP you may do the following (if it feels right to you):

  • Speak with a therapist to help you manage triggers
  • Turn down the volume on your life so you can really listen to your body and you intuition. Slow down. Schedule some time in nature. Get off social media for a day (or at least the morning.)
  • Nourish your body. Your body is the instrument of your sensitivity and intuition. Eat mostly plants. Body brush. Self massage. Use essential oils. I am a doTERRA fan. Clink here to purchase these amazing oils at wholesale prices. or reply to this email for more info. (Console and Balance are my all-time favourite when feeling overly sensitive.)
  • Play a song and move to it. Let your body move how it needs to for release or for pleasure.
  • Practice embodiment. Embodiment is intimacy with your body and the subtle (or not so subtle) sensations that you experience moment by moment. Take 5 mins to sit with your hands on you belly, breathe slowly and do a body scan. Where does your body feel tense and constricted? Where does your body feel open and good?
  • Boundaries Boundaries Boundaries! Whose energy/problems/emotions are you taking on?

Gentle Hugs,
